Quirky Crafting using Air Dry Clay

One of the things I’ve become rather obsessed with over the last few years is air dry clay. It started when the boy had a set for his birthdays, we’d sit there and create little Minecraft style characters in general, but he cottoned on quite quickly that he could get the figures he couldn’t find in the shops if he asked me to create them for him. I made him the bone piranha plant from Super Mario and it turned out better than I expected so I started thinking, is this is a hidden skill I didn’t even know I had?! I even made Mr Quirky a Marshmallow Man (from Ghostbusters) keyring for his birthday one year!

I decided to have a bit more fun with it, buying more and more packs so I could create whimsy kawaii creatures, funky trees, I tried to create myself, my boy, anything I wanted, it became a form of therapy, it’s calming and relaxing. I even tried creating my parents to give them as a gift, I made them in a sitting position so they could sit on the end of a plant pot or something. They don’t look exactly like them obviously, they are caricatures, but it’s based on them!

I haven’t played with clay much in the last year, but a month or so ago, my sister asked me if I could create a cake topper for my brother-in-law’s 40th birthday. She asked if I could incorporate them as a family, my sister, her husband and their two little daughters. They live on a farm and initially the plan was for them to sit on hay bales, but then we decided that a patchwork picnic blanket was more their scene as they often go on picnics and it would give a base for the characters. I thought giving the girls cow print dresses was a cute nod to the dairy farm they own and run. What I didn’t realise at the time was that my sister’s plan was to make a cow print cake for the topper to sit on…great minds eh?!
I had to create them gradually, this was by far the biggest project I had worked on and there was more pressure than before as I wanted to get it right. I have documented some of the process in pictures, I’ll add them here.

And here’s the end result, I was asked at the last minute if I could add a Tregroes Waffle and a bottle of tomato sauce, as my brother-in-law is a big fan of both. I was pretty proud of myself, it’s not perfect, I’m sure art and clay experts could do a much better job using better tools etc but I don’t think this is too bad considering I’m quite an amateur when it comes to this stuff!

There are loads of different sets you can buy if you fancy giving air dry clay a go yourself. It’s not just for children, it’s something us grown-ups can enjoy playing with too. Life is stressful enough, and this is something you can work with in a relaxing way in front of the tv if you want to, as long as you have a tray of some sort to work on. It does dry quickly so make sure you keep things sealed. I personally prefer the pots as they keep everything as they should do, but if you want to buy the packs (you do get more for your money) make sure you store them in an air-tight container so that they don’t dry out. I like looking for sets that have peach, brown, black and white colours in the mix as they are the ones I use most. But it depends what kind of things you want to create so buy a pack and see where your imagination takes you!

You can also get little sets that show you what you should create and it has the colours you need in the kit to create that animal or creature etc. This might be a good starting point and they certainly would make fabulous stocking fillers for you know when!

If you do end up giving this a go, please do send me pics or videos of your creations, I’d love to see them!

Unique Father’s Day gift ideas to spoil the Father figures in your life

With Father’s Day approaching here in the UK, I thought a post with quirky, whimsical, one-of-a- kind ideas of what you can gift the Fathers, Dads, Daddies, Grandads etc in your life. I’d like to help you think outside the box, beyond the funny mugs and socks! Fathers Day, as well as any other celebration day shouldn’t be about commercialism and “getting something that’ll do” it’s about showing you care, showing that you’ve put some thought into it. A unique gift, whatever the price, shows that you know them, that they are unique and not like anyone else too. Etsy is known for being the place to go if you want something a little bit unusual, it is the home of uniqueness, and a great hunting ground for my quirky shopping for Fathers Day.

This cute little magnet is at the top of my list. It’s tea-themed, it has a face and it’s got a funny little pun too! It’s a sweet, thoughtful little gift, just goes to show, there’s no need to be too flashy, something like this can mean a lot!

Yes, you can actually get a figure of your Father figure! I love this custom crochet creation, what a great idea as a gift. There are so many themes you can choose from here, but I think for Father’s Day, a simple replica of your favourite photo is perfect! This is unusual and would be a well-received gift.

Reach for the skies with this adorable rocket and stars themed keyring set. You can choose up to 6 small star-shaped name tags and personalise to fit your family. The text that says Daddy can change to whatever you want too. I particularly love the star keyring that holds them all together!

If gaming is a thing in your household, this adorable t-short could be just the ticket! This is not a two-piece set, but you can make that happen if you want to. There are a few colours and sizes to choose from, and you can even choose bodysuits or children t-shirts for the second design. Perfect gift for those who love to level up in all aspects of life!

I don’t think any Father’s Day blog would be complete without a couple of gardening elements! I love wheelbarrow shaped planters, it’s so whimsical, why would you opt for a standard pot when you can have something like this? I have gifted my Father a wheelbarrow planter in the past, it wasn’t personalised though, I think being able to personalise it makes it even more special. Add a plant or some bulbs if you want to really spoil him!

This might not look like a Father’s Day gift as is, but it’s customisable so you can choose the wording, colour and size, but I love this as an idea. It oozes charm and a sense of humour! Imagine their proud face as they see a kooky sign all about them on the wall, now that would be priceless!

Whether people know it or not, a box is always handy to have, so let’s tick that practical box with this one! I adore the whimsical design on the word FATHER, it has so many kooky elements to it! You can choose the colour of the wood and the print, and the extra charm of being personalised. Fill this with his favourite sweets or chocolates or whatever and it would be an even more winning idea!

I know that not all men like jewellery, but I truly believe that even the most anti-jewellery of men would find it hard not to like this bracelet. It’s not just a bracelet, it’s a photo projection bracelet, and that makes it a very special and extremely precious piece of jewellery.

If you’re going to say it with chocolate, it might as well be a super funky chocolate pizza! I bet he’d get a right kick out of this. Calling it “The Gourmet” chocolate pizza just adds a little fancy touch which will go down a treat too! And the best thing about this is that he can share it with you too!!

What do you get a man who doesn’t want anything? A pet rock, of course! This little cutie has such an infectious smile, I can’t imagine anyone opening this gift and not smiling!! And everyone likes to know that they rock, don’t they?! Dad, I think you rock!

I hope this gives you a little flavour of what you can choose for the wonderful and deserving Fathers in your life, I hope they’ve made you feel like a unique gift is an option worth exploring. If you’d like to see what else there is available, Etsy have created a hub that’s full to the brim with amazing gift ideas for Dads, click here to see what they’ve got in there, I have no doubt that you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for. As always, I’m more than happy to help if you have a specific product or theme in mind and need help finding it, you know where I am!

Quirky Pancakes for Pancake Day or just because!

I have pancakes on my mind, it’s Pancake Day / Shrove Tuesday and I’m already salivating at the thought of my tea time pancakes. Hopefully I will have the ingredients I need to make them by then, if not, my boy will march me to the shops to get whatever we need!! It is one of my favourite days, it’s guilt-free indulgence, don’t you think? I mean, we’re just respecting our culture and traditions, nothing to do with being gutsy!!

I have a gorgeous little shop on Etsy called LittlePancakeCo who have such unusual and unique pancake mix flavours, I thought this was the perfect day to showcase them. Just remember they are pancake mixes, you’ll have to make them this look good yourself!!

Loaded Rocky Road
American Style Pancake Mix
Limited Edition – Chocolate Orange American Style Pancake Mix
Apple Crumble and Cinnamon Pancake Mix
Banana and Milk Chocolate Pancake Mix
Vegan Classic American Style Pancake Mix
Cherry and Dark Chocolate Pancake Mix
Triple Chocolate Gourmet Pancake Mix
Gourmet Toffee Apple Pancake Mix

I would find it very very hard to choose which flavour to go for in all honesty. I would love to try the rocky road, the chocolate orange and the apple crumble more than the others, but I’d be quite happy doing a taste test on all of the above. I’m all for trying unique flavours, but what I like about the flavours chosen here is that they are not too weird for pancakes! So which one would you like to eat right now?
